Rafael Nadal in doubt for Australian Open, cancels training camp in Mallorca

first_imgWorld number one Rafael Nadal’s participation in the season-opening Grand Slam Australian Open has come under clouds after he cancelled a training camp in Mallorca this week.Nadal has been in trouble with a knee injury and having cancelled the five-day training camp, he has raised doubts over his return to competitive action.Nadal, last month, withdrew from the ATP Finals with knee injury after losing his opening match to first-time qualifier David Goffin of Belgium.Goffin also defeated world No.2 Roger Federer in the semi-final of the tournament, only to lose in the final against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov.Even before the ATP Finals, Nadal had pulled out of Paris Masters in November with injury issues.Nadal’s training partner Joao Sousa confirmed that the former is still not ready to practice due to the injury.”He called me to tell me he was not feeling well,” Sport24 quoted Sousa, as saying.Sousa further confirmed that the world number one had recently travelled to Barcelona for another check-up on his troublesome knee.Nadal is slated to make his first playing appearance since ATP Finals at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, beginning December 29.Nadal has enjoyed a stellar 2017 after making a comeback from a long-term injury in 2016.Since his return to competitive tennis, Nadal has won two of the four Grand Slam in Paris and the United States.After reaching the final of the Australian Open in the beginning of 2017, Nadal followed it up with winning ATP title at clay before winning his record 10th French Open title.advertisementDespite not having that great a Wimbledon, Nadal fought right back to beat Juan Martin del Potro in the final of the US Open to win his third title there.However, his knee trouble recurred after that and his exceptional year ended with nursing his knee.(With inputs from ANI)last_img
