CDC deactivating emergency response for Zika virus

first_imgThe Centers for Disease Control is deactivating its emergency response to the spread of the Zika virus in the US to routine status. The CDC deactivated its emergency response for Zika virus (Zika) to transition efforts to normal program operations on September 29.Emergency Operations Center (EOC)On January 22, 2016, CDC activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in response to the devastating effects of Zika virus infection in the US during pregnancy. A team of experts from across the agency, called the Zika Coordination and Operations Transition Team (ZCOTT), will lead the transition from EOC activation to routine, long-term activities and will ensure timely coordination and collaboration on scientific, communication, and policy activities.CDC’s EOC is the agency’s command center for monitoring and coordinating emergency response to public health threats and has been activated previously for events such as natural disasters, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, and the 2014 Ebola outbreak, among others.Protecting Americans from ZikaSince the 2016 EOC activation for Zika, experts from across the agency have worked to protect Americans, especially pregnant women, fetuses, and infants, from the emerging virus and its devastating consequences. CDC will continue its work to protect these groups by providing support for healthcare providers as they counsel pregnant women affected by Zika and provide follow-up care to their infants. CDC recognizes the continued need for coordination among federal, state, and local levels to provide services for families affected by Zika and will provide technical assistance as resources permit.Zika threat hasn’t lessened Deactivation does not mean that the threat of Zika has lessened in importance or that people are no longer at risk of infection.Zika continues to be a public health threat in the United States and internationally. Zika is still a risk for pregnant women, and the continental United States and Hawaii will continue to see some travel-related cases as travelers visit countries and territories with risk of Zika transmission. The possibility of local transmission in the continental United States and Hawaii still exists. CDC remains committed to protecting the health of Americans and will continue working to protect the nation from the threat of Zika.As a reminder, CDC recommends travelers to areas with a risk of Zika to take steps to prevent Zika by preventing mosquito bites and sexual transmission of Zika during and after travel. CDC continues to recommend that pregnant women avoid travel to areas with risk of Zika.last_img read more

Reggae Gold Awards to commemorate 50 years of reggae

first_imgTo mark the 50th anniversary of reggae’s birth, the Jamaican government will stage a Reggae Gold Awards this year. The event, announced on January 20 by entertainment minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange, will recognize persons who have contributed to the music’s development.Honoring reggae icons “We will be honoring 50 icons, or 50 individuals, groups, or whoever has contributed to the development of the music here and overseas, and have helped to take it to the world,” Grange said at a function to launch Reggae Month. She did not disclose a date for the event, or the criteria for selection awardees, but said it is appropriate to acknowledge persons who have made their mark on Jamaican pop culture since 1969.Musicologists usually point to ‘Nanny Goat’ by Larry and Alvin. or ‘Do the Reggae’ by Toots and the Maytals as the first reggae songs. Interestingly, both were released in 1968, 51 years ago.Despite getting international acclaim, many reggae stalwarts have never been recognized by the Jamaican government during its annual national awards ceremony which takes place in October. Some entertainers, including influential singer Dennis Brown, were awarded posthumously. Others, like singer Eric Donaldson, have never been cited even though he has won the annual Festival Song Contest six times.Plans for international reggae museum At the January 20 function, tourism minister Edmund Bartlett said the government plans to construct an international reggae museum in Kingston, the Jamaica capital.According to Bartlett, his administration will provide J$25 million to start the project through the Tourism Enhancement Fund. This amount, he added, goes to the scoping, design and development of the facility.“We need to collect all the artefacts from across the island and the world, and to bring them here, to repatriate that key part of our cultural patrimony that now resides in different places across the world and bring it to Jamaica,” Bartlett said.Reggae Month highlightsReggae Month is officially celebrated in February with concerts, seminars and awards ceremonies. This year’s highlights include Reggae in the Village in Ocho Rios, and Reggae In the Park in Linstead on February 1; and Reggae Celebrates at Bob Marley Museum on February 6, which commemorates the late singer’s 74th birthday.last_img read more

Haitian University Students Stage “Hunger Strike” to Protest President Moise

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Students from the Faculty of Law and Economics of the State University of Haiti (UEH) are continuing their hunger strike to force President Jovenel Moise out of office, even as four of them opted out of the protest that entered its second week on Monday. The remaining 11 students, including two women, have vowed to continue the hunger strike insisting that they are “clear in our demands.“We chose not to eat until the President of the Republic hand over the key of the National Palace. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the change of our country, we are in an unlimited strike, until the resignation of the President,” one of the students said. The students have been posting handwritten messages on the walls where they are holed up at the university in Creole to express their demands.During the day, the students spend their time lying on blankets or on a thin mattress, consuming only water and in some cases intravenous serum as had been provided last Thursday by the Red Cross..”The actions by the students come as thousands of people took to the streets on Sunday for the second rally organized by a group of artists demanding that Moise, who came to power in 2017, demit office. The political and economic crisis in Haiti was triggered by the publication in January 2019 of a report on the Venezuela-funded PetroCaribe Oil initiative, under which Caracas provided oil and other petroleum products to Haiti under a preferential agreement.Moise has denied any wrongdoing and has named former prime minister Evans Paul to head a team that would hold discussions with all stakeholders to discuss a way forward.Moise has urged Haitians to “identify their real enemies’ and again warned that the system which deprives the country of developing is alive and well in the country.“The system has the capacity to regenerate each time. The people must be able to identify their real enemies,” he said last week, adding “this system that generates misery, poverty, exclusion, has come to an end and we must work together to prevent it from regenerating”.But as they marched through the streets, one of the artists, the rapper, Zolan warned that ‘there will not always be a march on Sundays. We have other strategies to be announced soon”.Police clashed with demonstrators who had used burning tires to erect roadblocks and attempted to burn down several businesses. The authorities were also investigating the death of an unidentified man, whose body was discovered not far from the National Police of Haiti in Pétion-Ville, a suburb of the capital.Police also had to use tear gas and rubber bullets during clashes with demonstrators in Pétion-ville and Delmas, where several vehicles were vandalized.Media reports Monday said that a police inspector, identified as Jocelyn Jeantelus, who was assigned to the Carrefour police station, was shot in the head by unidentified individuals.last_img read more

AUDIO: Duke Udi Reflects On Outgone NPFL Season

Sunshine Stars might eventually cap their season with silverware as they are still in contention for the Aiteo Cup, where they host Udi’s former side, Osun United in the second leg of the quarter final fixture on Saturday.Related Audio Player00:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. “Duke Udi Septembe 22” Sunshine Stars coach Duke Udi has been reflecting on the performance of his team in the just-concluded Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, after guiding the ‘Owena Waves’ to safety. The Akure-based side finished the campaign on 10th spot on the final NPFL standings despite battling relegation (on 17th position) when the ex-international took over the reins. Under his tutelage, Sunshine also recorded three away wins in the season, the most by any team in the league. In an exclusive chat with , the former Enyimba, Shooting Stars and Grasshoppers of Switzerland midfielder, attributed his team’s relative success to a collective effort.“First and foremost, I give God the glory because it is all about God and none of us. He did the magic; we are just agents. Thank God he used us,” said the 41-year old.“It is not a good thing for you to battle relegation. When I took up the job, people called me and asked ‘why did you take this kind of job?’ But for me, if there is no challenge, there is no reward. And I believe challenges make a man to be tough.“I took the job because I believe we (with his assistants) are able of pulling them out (of relegation) and by the special grace of God, like I said, He did it.The former Osun United handler was equally appreciative of the efforts of his players, management and owners of the team in ensuring that they escaped the dreaded drop to the lower division.“I have to give kudos to my players because they doubled their efforts and the management increased the motivation and the (Ondo) State Government came in.“Our new State Governor (Rotimi) Akeredolu is a lover of football. He came to cheer the boys (players) up and, he also started paying the salaries and match bonuses owed the team. So that was the tonic we needed.“The Supporters were there for us and everybody believed and we worked together as a team. It was a team work that brought us out of relegation,” he concluded. After taking over at the club from ex-Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen, Udi guided the former CAF Champions League semi-finalists to 8 wins and 5 loses in 13 NPFL matches last season.center_img 0:50 “Duke Udi Septembe 22” 1. last_img read more

InBet Games: Innovating around regulatory certainty

first_img Submit Share One of the most important themes running through the gambling sector today is the issue of regulatory oversight, writes Pavel Korolev, Business Development Director for InBet Games. The issue of regulatory oversight is of paramount importance to every gambling operator; what you can and cannot do in any given jurisdiction varies from country to country and keeping on the right side of the rules is a vital element of operations. Indeed, perhaps the most important element. When it comes to your service suppliers, the issue of regulation is a prominent issue that needs to be addressed.Experience of dealing with such issues across many jurisdictions is therefore of vital importance. This is one reason why InBet prides itself on the fact that, over 15 years, we have provided working solutions for gaming, betting and lottery operators in over 40 countries.Key among this number are the two national lottery operators on our roster of clients – that itself is an example of the degree to which we are a trusted partner for each and every customer we deal with.Working within such regimes as those outlined in Russia, Kazakhstan and other CIS markets, we ensure that operators will also be on the right side of the rules and will have that security of knowing that the games they deploy will not fall foul of the laws of the land.As an example: though classic slots and RNG games are popular globally, in many territories there are restrictions on exactly what you can offer the customer. It creates a vacuum of demand that operators are unable to supply.Yet, through our experience, at InBet we were able to discard RNG within a product that emulates a slot game but uses an animated simulation that derives from making bets on real-life events. This solution has been approved and certified by BMM Testlabs – the world’s leading gaming certification entity – and it has also passed legal scrutiny both internally and via external lawyers in each jurisdiction where the solution is deployed. It means you are not playing hit and miss on the regulatory front and ensures that your business will not be disrupted by any legal surprises. Here at InBet, we see the Americas as a particularly exciting opportunity for our product range, which includes one example where consumers who buy a jukebox or an ebook get complimentary access to a pre-installed sweepstake app.The pattern of growth that is beginning to emerge across the continent is one we have witnessed before in the markets of the CIS.With regulators still feeling their way towards opening up – and with existing gaming and lottery and gaming providers in each territory nervously eyeing up both the opportunity and the threat – we think it is a great time for operators to take a look at proven products with proven track records in similarly regulated territories. We can provide the products that give the regulators certainty over the outcome of deploying our products while operators also know they will be providing their customers with an engaging, safe, reliable and profitable product. 6 of the Best – Better Collective’s Gavin Moore

first_imgShare Submit Gavin Moore, Head of Traffic and Brand for leading iGaming affiliate Better Collective, has completed his 6 of the Best profile for SBC News.Find out about the film Moore has a newfound appreciation for, the sporting comeback he’ll never forget, and the author he discovered upon moving to Denmark. Best HolidayBefore I became a dad, I was an avid diver, so my best trip was probably when my wife and I took a small tour of Indonesia, where we stopped off in Bali, Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands, and Lombok. To be fair, with beautiful underwater life, good surfing, mountains to climb, rice fields to wander, magnificent views, and incredible beaches – there was not a lot to dislike.Best AlbumRadiohead – OK Computer. It is just a great album from track 1 to track 12. It has no deeper meaning to me than the fact it is fantastic music, which I still quite happily listen to today.Best FilmFinding Nemo – Okay, it hasn’t always been that, but I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for it. My son likes it, and it has taught him a lot about sea life and the types of creatures you find in the ocean. Plus, let’s be honest, it has its funny moments.Right now, this is my favourite – but that probably also has something to do with the fact that I don’t get much of a say in what we watch at home…Best Sporting ExperienceAs a Sheffield Wednesday fan and an Englishman, I have had very little to cheer about in my 32 years so far with neither club nor country. In fact one of my most vivid early football memories was an away day with my dad in 1999 to see Sheffield Wednesday in Newcastle – we lost 8-0 and I cried all the way home. However, in Europe, I’ve always had a soft spot for Manchester United. Seeing their comeback against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final is something I won’t forget in a hurry.Best BookI have to hold my hands up and say I am not a massive reader – I don’t really find the time for it now if I am honest. However, since moving to Denmark, I discovered the Danish author Jakob Ejersbo, and I really enjoyed his African Trilogy consisting of Exile, Revolution and Liberty. They were good companions on diving holidays when taking a break between dives.Best AppWhy, that is Better Collective’s SmartBets app… Okay, other than the blatantly obvious, I am a massive Uber fan. It just makes my life a lot easier when I am out travelling and collecting receipts. But we’re all familiar with this one, so there’s no need for further explanation.
