Police Association asks, ‘what if cops could legally use weed?’

first_imgStuff co.nz 10 October 2018Family First Comment: “The association would not take a pro or an anti-legalisation stance in the public debate because its members had to enforce the law, whatever it was.” Wrong answer. The police should be arguing for an anti-legalisation stance, just as they argue against alcohol outlets and licences. #PeopleAboveProfits www.VoteNo.nzWhether or not frontline cops can use cannabis and work if legalisation occurs will need to be decided, the Police Association says. With a referendum looming on legalising the recreational use of cannabis the Police Association is asking members to consider the implications for frontline officers who use the drug if it becomes legal.Police Association president Chris Cahill raised the issue on Wednesday at the opening in the association’s annual conference exploring the theme “Weeding out the referendum: Policing with a ‘Yes’ vote”.“From a policing perspective there is another impairment challenge not immediately obvious to this debate, if cannabis is legal cops can use it too.“The consequences of THC being detected in a drug test following a critical incident such as a police shooting are extremely serious for us,” Cahill said.Police already had a policy advising that they don’t come to work if affected by alcohol or illegal drugs. If cannabis became legal, police would need to know exactly where they stood on their own personal use.“We cannot have [officers] turning up to work believing they are clean, only to test positive for THC following a critical incident that may have occurred days after use of cannabis,” Cahill said.As for the policing of drug driving, developing a roadside test for cannabis was not as easy as it sounded and was fraught with complications. These included delays between stopping a driver and taking a blood test, chronic users still testing positive even after 30 days of abstinence, variables in cannabis strength, whether it was inhaled or consumed and the mixing of cannabis with alcohol.Defining impairment would take serious scientific and legal input and the sooner this insight began, the better, Cahill said. The association would not take a pro or an anti-legalisation stance in the public debate because its members had to enforce the law, whatever it was.Responding to criticism from an association member on the devastation wrought by the legalisation of synthetic cannabis, police minister Stuart Nash said very strong arguments could be made for and against legalising genuine cannabis but the issue must be framed around health rather than crime. The issue of arrested development in young, heavy cannabis users was a concern but the counter to that was the harm caused by gangs and Nash questioned whether it might be better to target synthetics, methamphetamine and the synthetic opiod fentanyl – if it arrived.READ MORE: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/107727589/police-association-asks-what-if-cops-can-legally-use-weedKeep up with family issues in NZ. Ramjattan greeted with protest at Corriverton public meeting

first_img– tells residents closure of estate was right decisionPublic Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, Leader of the Alliance for Change, was on Saturday again greeted by protesting supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic during a public meeting at Corriverton, Upper Corentyne, Region Six.Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan and party members at the meeting on SaturdaySupporters of the PPP at the protest line on SaturdayIt was evident that the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the Coalition Government at the next regional and national elections had avoided intermingling with supporters of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) during the meeting. The protesters accused Ramjattan of betraying sugar workers by colluding to close the sugar estates, and bombarded him for the street lights that the APNU/AFC Government had promised to install at Corriverton. They also accused him of turning a blind eye on the upsurge in crime. There were also placards that indicated to the minister that the tears of sugar workers were falling on him, and there were placards demanding the $10,000 cash grant.Ramjattan, however, lashed out at the protestors and at Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo for not understanding the ruling of the Chief Justice on the house-to-house registration case.A public announcement had stated that Ramjattan, Parliamentarian Reynard Ward, and Alliance For Change (AFC) Executive member Dereck Basdeo were among those slated to speak at this public meeting. There was no mention of top APNU officials being slated to speak, although that faction of the Coalition had won seats on the Council. Region Six (East Berbice/ Corentyne) representative Barbra Pilgrim was reportedly not notified of the public meeting. The public service announcement (PSA) had also stated that issues regarding street lights, road repairs, crime, and other concerns of Corriverton residents were going to be addressed by the Minister.During this meeting, Basdeo accused the Town Council of being lazy, while Ramjattan told residents that the Coalition Government would have established a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the sugar estate, to determine the way forward.“When we got into office, we (knew) that sugar was not profitable, and we decided to right-size sugar. Right-size means that you are not going to close it down, but you would close down those estates that are unprofitable, and to privatise it if it could be privatised; and that is exactly what we did,” Ramjattan stated. The closure of the estates has left more than 20,000 people unemployed, and the sacked workers now have to turn to alternative means to support their families.Ramjattan, however, added that the Government made the right decision to close the estates. He said the citizenry would become filthy rich in the near future with the booming oil sector coming on stream. At the meeting, residents asked about the street lights, but were told that Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson had offered 200 lights to the Municipality.“Things in this world are not free. If you give it free you will create indiscipline, plus you will end up with bankruptcy. What the Minister told communities is that you have to pay $300 for one lamp,” Ramjattan explained. That money, he said, has to be paid to the Guyana Power and Light as monthly charges for electricity used.“How do you get that money? You have to increase taxes by a $20 or $30”, he told the residents.last_img read more

Fishing the North Coast: Halibut, rockfish take center stage

first_imgWith Tuesday’s closing of the recreational salmon season, halibut and rockfish will once again become the main course on the menu. The off again, on again halibut closures are very much warranted, but it does make the finding the bottom dwellers a little more difficult right off the bat. Boats will likely need a little time on the water in order find the fish and put up some decent scores.Rockfish, on the other hand, have been fairly easy to find. And so far this in this young season, they’ve …last_img

[Poll] Who Owned Social Media This Election: Romney or Obama?

first_imgdan rowinski If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, there is a very good chance you have been bombarded with campaign news and opinion just about every minute of every day for the last year and a half. Most of the chatter likely comes from your annoying, politically minded friends and followers, but the campaigns have also taken to social media like no election before. The campaigns for President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney have fought a bitter battle of memes, opinions, insight and slander in 2012 – and it has been hard to ignore. The question is, though, who won the social media battle this year, Obama or Romney? See some examples of each and take the poll below. President Obama Sent Direct Messages To All His Twitter FollowersThe Second Social Media ElectionIn 2008, the presidential contest between Barack Obama and John McCain was considered the first true “social media” election. Many pundits believed that one reason Obama trounced McCain on election night was his superior and ubiquitous social media campaign. In 2012, the social media winner in the presidential election is not so clear cut.The campaigns and their official supporters have been… interesting. Among other things, we have seen:Samuel L. Jackson telling voters to “wake the &%#! up” in a YouTube video sponsored by The Jewish Council for Education and Research.Obama’s campaign make pithy jokes over Facebook about Romney’s Big Bird snafu.Romney create memes over Obama’s “you didn’t build that” line from a stump speech.Daily updates of information or misinformation from both parties. If you like this type of political banter, the last six months or so has been a series of treats in your daily news feed. If not, well, it is almost over. Whose Message Is It?It has been increasingly difficult this year to separate official campaign messages from the messages of the political action committees from the random warblings of your friends. That makes it tough to proclaim a winner of the social media side of this election. The sheer volume of pictures, status updates, meme generators, infographics and the like has been overwhelming from both sides. Even if you do not follow a single candidate on Facebook, Twitter or other social network, your friends probably do, and they have no doubt been sharing these status updates, pictures and videos for months on end. We might look at 2012 as the year when the volume of viral network effects of politically minded online sharing increased by orders or magnitude over previous election cycles. A Lot Of Pictures Of Mitt On FacebookCan we declare a winner for the best social media campaign? We put that question to you. Take the poll below and let us know what you think in the comments. first_imgAmazon is bringing mobile Web applications to its Appstore for Android. The Amazon Mobile App Distribution program announced this morning that developers creating apps for the Kindle Fire tablet and select Android devices will be able to publish to Amazon’s app store. That means that developers will not have to create specific native Android apps for the Kindle Fire and employ HTML5 to distribute applications in Amazon’s app ecosystem.Amazon renders Web apps on the Kindle Fire through Google’s open source Chromium engine. Web apps will be able to employ Amazon’s in-app purchasing purchasing application programming interface as well as use the company’s digital currency, Amazon Coins. Amazon’s HTML5 runtime supports most major features in the standard except for features that are not supported by the Kindle Fire, such as hardware components like GPS, camera access, accelerometer and or the microphone. Amazon also does not support WebGL or the Fullscreen API in HTML5. Developers can start building HTML5 apps for the Amazon Appstore by downloading the software developer kit and testing their Web apps through Amazon’s developer site.
