Local students receive garden kits

first_imgWHITNEY POINT (WBNG) — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is handing out garden kits to students in four local districts. CCE will be handing out the remainder of the kits to students in Susquehanna Valley, Harpursville and Windsor school districts. Each kit contains an Earthbox container, cool-season seeds, garden and kitchen tools. “The idea is that we’ll be able to make a salad,” Truesdail said. “Make a fresh salad or do some cooking with kale, and some of the herbs they’re growing as well.” “A lot of people don’t think about growing things in the cold season,” Truesdail said. “We will be showing them tips to grow cold season crops.” Truesdail says students will be growing lettuce, spinach and kale. CCE received a $50,000 grant through NYS Agriculture and Markets to give kits to students in four local districts. Megan Truesdail, elementary ag in the classroom teacher, says there will be Zoom calls in the fall to help students and parents with their crops. The kits are designed to empower students with the knowledge, skills and resources to grow their own food. last_img read more
