New fuboTV users can sign up with a seven-day free trial. For once, the hottest driver in NASCAR might not be the favorite going into a race. Kyle Busch, the Cup Series points leader after earning his fourth win of the season last week, is heading to a track that hasn’t been great to him over the years. His 89.2 driver rating at Michigan is ninth best among the current top 16-rated drivers. In his career, Busch has led 255 laps at Michigan; among the tracks NASCAR has visited thus far in 2019, he has led fewer laps at only Talladega (238) and Las Vegas (254).”I’m not entirely sure (what to expect),” Busch said of Michigan this week. “We’ll just go into the weekend like we always do — keep working on our car to be the best it can be in practice on Friday and hope we have a shot to get back to victory lane there. We have had a lot of struggles on the repave, but turned that around a bit last year.”Our whole team has shown how well we’ve worked together and (crew chief) Adam (Stevens) has been able to make the right calls, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he has in store for me at Michigan this weekend.”MORE: Full 2019 NASCAR Cup Series schedule Among the favorites this weekend at Michigan will be Kevin Harvick, who is still looking for his first win of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season. Harvick is the top-rated driver at Michigan among those with at least six previous starts, and he has five top-five finishes in his last seven Michigan races, including a second-place finish and a win. Another favorite will be Kyle Larson, whose three consecutive wins at Michigan from 2016-17 has only been matched twice in NASCAR history (Bill Elliott, four straight in 1985-86; David Pearson, three straight in 1972-73).As has been the case for many of the NASCAR Cup Series races on the schedule this season, the rules package implemented for 2019 will be a variable for all race teams. Though Michigan is similar in size and structure to Auto Club Speedway, where the series raced in March, the recently repaved surface at Michigan figures to create a style of racing unique to this track with the current aerodynamics package. Harvick, though, thinks familiar factors will be in play.”How you finish at Michigan depends on how your day is going,” he said this week. “If you’re having a good day, it’s not really hard to tell your guys what you need, and everyone is in a good mood. If you’re having a bad day, you can get behind at Michigan really fast. You’re going to end up with a green-flag pit stop and a whole bunch of green flag laps. You just have to be going from the time the green flag drops and keep yourself in position at the end.”last_img read more
